As we mentioned in Rulebook 101 – the beginning our events are governed by British Cycling’s rules. That means that we work with their Age categories – Section 5.9.
The Age categories can seem a little complex – for the most part because the cyclo-cross season runs across two years. What this really means is that if you have a birthday between September and the new year you’ll move up “early” and race as what’ll you’ll be next year.
So at the beginning of the season check your category. Here are a couple of examples:
- At the first race you’re 39 years old, but have your birthday on 30 November then you’ll race this season as a V40; or
- You’re 11 but you turn 12 in December then you’re a Youth – U14 – because you won’t be under 12 next year.
- … … … PS. happy birthday!

One of our volunteers, Steve Hand, does a terrific breakdown of this which appears here.
You need to race in your correct age category to collect League points andor National Ranking points.
